This was the last book I read during 2021, and it was definitely unique. The story follows Moss, a girl who lives on a magical island with her Pa and a boy named Callan who is part fish. Everything goes along as normal until Pa begins a depression period that makes him irritable and somewhat violent towards Callan and Moss. Then, two boys wash up on the island from the rest of the world—places Moss never thought still existed. What will the four kids and Pa do now? You'll find out when you finish the book. This story is unique in that it is based off of Shakespeare's play The Tempest, but with several differences including the way magic is used. The book's chapters are set up like scenes in a play, which make the book quite different from others I've read. AR book level = 4.3 AR points = 10 339 pages
Playing it Cool centers around Sebastian, a charismatic high schooler who is the "go-to guy" if you need help. Sebastian has a network of people who owe him favors that he generally cashes in on for other people who need help. When his best friend Jeremy wants to track down his biological father, Sebastian does just that. In the process, they both learn a lot about themselves. Besides having strong characters, the book is a bit of a mystery as Sebastian's father is also absent from his life. He believes he is finding his own father as well as Jeremy's, making this a mystery with a few unexpected twists thrown in. |
