There has been a lot of hype around this book since the movie was released this summer. After reading the book, I can tell you that this book is worth the hype! (Disclaimer: I haven't watched the movie yet, so I'm not supporting that just yet.) The story follows Kya, known as the "Swamp Girl" by the locals. She's never gone to formal school, but she taught herself more about the swamp than ever could be learned in the classroom. There are only a few people she would consider friends or family since her biological family left early in her life. And of course, why would I be reading if there wasn't a bit of mystery? Kya is accused of murdering a local hero, which puts her life out in the open for all to see and dissect. I won't spoil the ending as it is meant to be experienced in all of its suspense, but I will say I didn't quite see it coming—something that is exciting as someone who's read a lot of mysteries.
