The Only Woman in the Room is a fictionalized account of Hedy (Kiesler) Lamarr's life from Austria to the United States. Born in 1914 to Jewish parents, Hedy grows up in the time before Hitler and the Nazi Party's climb to power. However, she is not immune to their philosophies, so she marries a man of power after working as an actress for several years. Though her husband keeps her safe for a time, Hedy finds she must get out of the marriage by any means possible and escape to a safer country. Later on, she goes back to acting. However, Hedy is a scientist at heart and designs brilliant inventions which have an impact on our technology today. The only problem is, no one wants to take a beautiful actress seriously on matters other than the stage...

Life was fairly simple for Lyra, a supposed orphan at Jordan College at Oxford University: she ran around and played as she wished with the other kids around the college. That all changes when she sneaks into a lecture and hears her uncle's scientific discoveries and proposals for more research. Within a short time, she is dismissed from the college and sets off on her own. The Golden Compass follows Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon as they dodge Gobblers, meet new friends such as the armored bear Iorek Byrnison, and search for the mysterious answer to "Dust." This is the first book in His Dark Materials trilogy, so the story ends at a cliff-hanger. |
