Pax tells the story between a fox and his boy. Peter's father makes Peter leave Pax in the woods before he is brought to his grandpa's house and his dad answers his draft orders. Pax is confused as to why is left alone in the woods with a single toy soldier as the remnant of his former life. After staying at his grandpa's house for a day, Peter knows he has made the worst decision of his life and makes his way back to Pax. Meanwhile, Pax is slowly learning to adapt to life as a wild fox and befriends a few who help him survive. This book was engaging as every chapter alternates between Pax and Peter's points of view. Anyone who has loved a pet or enjoys reading about them will enjoy this book. Spoiler alert: the ending is emotional. AR book level = 6.5 AR points = 18 331 pages
This is the first book in a longer series that was recently discarded from our library. Now the series is in my classroom. This first book centers around the Separatists, later known as the Puritans/Pilgrims, who come to the New World seeking religious freedom. The main character, Gilbert, is an able swordsman, which helps as the small group finally arrives in the New World and must survive a first harsh winter followed by waves of sickness. Anyone who likes to read historical fiction, particularly looking at the Pilgrims' voyage will enjoy this book. AR book level = 5.5 AR points = 8 229 pages
Although this is technically the fourth book in The Squire's Tales series, you can read this book by itself since you don't need to know anything from the previous books. This book is about the knight Perceval (spelled Parsifal in the book) who became part of King Arthur's Round Table. The story is told from the perspective of Perceval's page, or servant, Piers who is the son of a blacksmith. If you like adventure and Arthurian legends, this is the book for you! I've read many of Gail Carson Levine's books; she wrote Ella Enchanted (now made into a movie), Fairest, Ever, The Fairy's Return, and many other books about fairy tales and fantasy. The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a story of two sisters who are princesses in the city of Bamarre. Princess Meryl, the adventurous sister contracts the Gray Death, a sickness without a cure. She will die within days if someone is unable to find the cure. Princess Addie is timid and likes to stay safe. However, when Meryl has the Gray Death and the cure is nowhere in sight, she decides she must try to save her sister and sets out on a quest for the cure. The ending is not too predictable and makes the story bittersweet. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to read fantasy and adventure books. |
