In this final book of the Folk of the Air series, Jude is sulking in the mortal world, taking odd jobs that only a Faerie-trained person can do until Taryn shows up at Vivienne's door. Taryn needs Jude to take her place in Faerie for a little while to straighten out suspicions around Locke's death. Jude breaks her exile to do this, fooling almost everyone that she is Taryn--everyone that is except Cardan. Now with a bit of trickery of her own, Jude must rise to her full position as High Queen even when many Folk laugh at a mortal among their ranks. But, Jude is out to show everyone that two monarchs are better than one and how they may make Elfhame flourish after all the upheaval.
Each book in this trilogy kept me engaged and guessing, between the political alignments and familial drama. I think Holly Black did a wonderful job of wrapping up the stories of Jude and her family; each character seemed to reach a fitting end.

I couldn't wait for the physical copy to come in, so I ended up reading the ebook from the library. Let me tell you, this is the first time I've read an entire book online, and I can say with certainty it will be the last for a long time. There is just something about physical books (besides not worrying about blue light and tired eyeballs) that makes reading so much more enjoyable. Anyway, off my soap box...
This second book of the series Folk of the Air kept me on my toes! There were a couple betrayals I didn't see coming as well as a few I did see. Jude has definitely lived Madoc's words, "Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold on to." Now, banished to the mortal realm, Jude must come up with a new scheme. Thankfully, I have the third book at the ready to find out the next part of Jude's plan! Nisha loves her one of kind pair of red crocodile Christian Louboutins boots, but when she and Sam accidentally grab the wrong bags at the gym, no one could have predicted the amount of heartache, anxiety, empowerment, and peace they eventually bring to both women. Nisha finds herself out of grace with her husband of 20 years and must carve out her own path once again for herself and her son. And those boots are the key to finally getting closure. Meanwhile, Sam has never owned a pair of boots so expensive and chic, which allows her to take chances and perhaps right her career and family disasters (even after the boots exasperate them).
Jude and her sisters were brought to Faerieland under duress, but eventually they accept this new world they're a part of. The mortal world is still there, and they visit once in a while, but for Jude, Faerieland is her home, and she'll do anything to fit in--even become a spy and play politics. By the end of the book, she's become known as "The Queen" within the Circle of Shadows as she's the kingmaker. Thank goodness, this is the first book of a series because Faerieland's future is still up in the air.
I really enjoyed the photos of people's off grid or unique homes in this book. The interviews were also interesting to read as they showed the variety in people's experiences with different housing options. The book wasn't necessarily what I had expected, but it was a good, quick read to introduce living off the grid. Yes, eventually, I would like to be more self-sustainable than I am currently; it's a life goal.
I didn't realize I had read this book several years ago, but I quickly remembered why I had liked reading it. The book starts in medias res, which means it hits the ground running with plot, dragging you straight into the conflict. Also, Margaret, one of the main characters, is able to bond with animals--they can understand her and she can understand them--in a sort of telepathic way. This supernatural ability plus the winding adventure all of the characters find themselves in make for a book that's hard to put down!
This first book in the Dangerous Damsels series is delightful! I love Holton's world built on polite pirates and radiant rogues since it brings the swashbuckling tales to modern times. Cecilia and Ned as well as their friends, family, and enemies are all well-developed characters who stand the test of time moving forward. I've read the second book and can't wait to get to the third book coming soon!
