I had never read Holes before this year, and I'm sorry I never tried it before. The book follows Stanley Yelnats (his name is a palindrome if you're curious) who is wrongfully accused of stealing a baseball player's shoes from a homeless shelter's charity auction. As punishment, Stanley chooses to go to Camp Green Lake instead of jail for 18 months. While there, he makes a friend while uncovering a secret connected to his great-grandfather. I recommend this book to anyone who likes action and adventure books. AR book level = 8.2 AR points = 18 296 pages
I finished this book over Christmas break and forgot to post it. Whoops! This book fits the realistic fiction genre; this means that the book is based on real life, but the characters and situations are made up. The author of An Old-Fashioned Girl is most famous for writing the book Little Women. The main character, Polly, goes to town to stay with some friends of her family, the Shaws. Since she lives in the country, and her family is poorer than her friends, she looks at life differently and thus acts differently. However, her differences are just what the Shaw family need as they navigate some difficult times. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes to read realistic (and in this case historical) fiction as the book takes place in the late 1800s/early 1900s. |
